Maruthaya’ is a very honest, daring, and dramtic exposure of the traumatic experiences of an honest politicain and his family. Director Vasantha Obeysekera’s frank and sensitive handling of an age old topic, conveys a clear message that in politics, honesty is not always the best policy! And politicians are losers everytime! Maruthaya highlights the tragic plight of a politician’s family, which had tasted all the perks of power when the going was good, and the shattering experience of being faced with defeat at the elections, and all the evil that comes with it in Sri Lanka. First the post election violence that the politician just couldn’t handle, and in a moment of desperation to save himself and his family, he became a victim. That was the beginning of the end for him. That left his wife and two pretty daughters to face the music-the discovery that the honest politician had squandered all his wealth in the pursuit of his political ambitions, which left the family destitute. They had no friends left, but lots of humiliation, insults, and shame that accompany political defeat. This led to the inevitable exposure to exploitation by men who took advantage of their plight. They became victims of a vicious, wicked, and unforgiving world. Maruthaya clearly demonstrates what a lot of people get affected by the futility of political power. A strong cast which includes Ashoka Peiris, Veena Jayakody, Sangeetha Weeraratne, Yashoda Wimaladharma and Kamal Addaraarachchi, combined with the unique direction techniques employed by Vasantha Obeysekera, make Maruthaya a memorable film. You will enjoy every minute of it.
